There are 5 central and 15 state archives in Kazakhstan. As of July 1, 2012, the total number of items stored in Kazakhstan archives is more than 20 million (files and documents). The main archival law - the Law of the Republic of Kazakhstan On the National Archival Fonds and Archives was adopted on December 22, 1998.

Central State Archives of the Republic of Kazakhstan. On September 1, 1921, the first state archive in the history of Kazakhstan - the Central Regional Archive was created on the basis of the Orenburg provincial archive. On January 24, 1922, the collegium of the People's Commissariat of the Republic approved the first official provision on the Central Regional Archive of the Kazakh Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic.
In 1925, the Central Archive of the Kazakh SSR was transferred to Kzyl-Orda, which had become the country’s capital. In 1929, the Central Archive was transferred to the new capital of Kazakhstan, Alma-Ata.
After the independence of Kazakhstan, the Central State Archive of the Republic of Kazakhstan was created.
Archive of Karaganda Branch of the Archive of the Committee on Legal Statistics and Special Accounts of the General Prosecutor's Office of the Republic of Kazakhstan. The Committee on Legal Statistics and Special Accounts of the General Prosecutor's Office of the Republic of Kazakhstan is formed by Decree No. 1050 of the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan of March 28, 2003 granting it the functions and powers to manage the property and affairs of the abolished Center for Legal Statistics and Information under the General Prosecutor's Office of the Republic of Kazakhstan.
An interdepartmental system of legal statistics reflecting the processes of law enforcement in the country was created in 1997 by the Decree of the Head of State On measures for further reforming the system of law enforcement bodies of the Republic of Kazakhstan, according to which, on the basis of statistical services of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, Ministry of Justice and the Criminal Information Center of the former State Investigation Committee, the Center for Legal Statistics and Information under the General Prosecutor's Office of the Republic of Kazakhstan was formed. Special records, reference and archival work are carried out at this institution.
