On March 3, 2010 the President of the Republic of Latvia proclaimed new Archives Law. According to this Law, former State archival system of Latvia since January 1, 2011 is reorganized within one body - the National Archives of Latvia. The National Archives of Latvia is legal successor of the obligations and property of the former institutions of the State archival system.
The National Archives of Latvia accumulate and store the records with archival value, provide accessibility of these records, supervise the observance of records management in the institutions and in the accredited private archives, accredits private archives and performs the other functions specified in Archives Law.
The National Archives of Latvia is an institution under the supervision of the Minister of Culture that implements governmental policy in the field of records and archives’ management. The National Archives of Latvia include: State Historical Archives of Latvia, State Archives of Latvia, Latvia State Archive of Audiovisual Documents, State Archives of Personnel Records of Latvia, 11 regional state archives, Department of Institutional Records and Archives Management, Department of the Preventive Preservation and Administration.
Since 2018 also former KGB archive was relocated to LNA, digitalized KGB archive files are stored on www.kgb.arhivi.lv
