Since 1 January 2005, the National Archives has been a central administrative authority and a central state archives directly managed by the Ministry of the Interior. It is an organisational unit of state and an accounting unit; its budget is a part of the budget chapter of the Ministry of the Interior.
The archive administers archive groups of political, financial, judicial and ecclesiastical administration arisen from the activities of central authorities and institutions of the Bohemian state from the mid-12th to the mid-19th century.
Archive groups of political, financial, judicial and mining administration and provincial self-government arisen from the activities of the provincial authorities of the Kingdom of Bohemia from the period 1848–1918 with overlaps into the 16th century. It administers also archive groups from the activities of the central administrative authorities, court offices and authorities managing the property of the imperial family from the same period, gained in the file and archive separation with Austria.
Archive groups of political, financial and judicial administration arisen from the activities of the central bodies of the Czechoslovak Republic and the Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia in the years 1918–1945, including the fonds of the German occupation authorities and the fonds of the Czechoslovak exile state bodies abroad 1939–1945. The department also administers archive groups of the Bohemian provincial administration and the Prague Police Headquarters.
Materials arisen from the activities of Czechoslovak central authorities from 1945–1968 and Czech and federal central authorities from 1969–1992, including their facilities with state-wide or republic scope. It also administers a complex archive group of central bodies of the Communist Party of Czechoslovakia. The relevant department also participates in the selection of archival records from the given time period.
The National Archives administers archive groups arisen from the activities of the central authorities of the Czech Republic since 1993. The department carries out all expert activities in relation to the circle of public agencies defined by law, supervises their record management, pre-archival care and selection of archival records. Relevant department also operates a specialized workplace for acceptance, long-term storage and access provision to documents in digital form related to agencies within the scope of the National Archives. Methodically operates at the national level (National Digital Archives).
The Security Services Archive, pursuant to Act No. 181/2007 Coll. on the Institute for the Study of Totalitarian Regimes and the Security Services Archive and on amendments to some acts, administers the records that were created by the former security services, the Communist Party of Czechoslovakia and organizations of the National Front working in these services, amounting to a total of almost 20.000 linear meters of material. The Archive currently administers over 550 archival collections from the periods of non-freedom and communist totalitarian power.
ARCHIVE DEPARTMENTS:
Department 1: Operative Files and Investigation Files
This department administers archival materials produced by the central and regional units of the former State Security. The repositories contain original materials from so-called operative archives, mostly as personal files, permanent storage materials and other attachments, microfiches and registry books.
Department 2: Collections of the Federal Ministry of the Interior
This department administers materials produced by the Ministry of the Interior (1945–1950 and 1953–1968), Ministry of National Security (1950–1953), Federal Ministry of the Interior (1969–1992), selected central units of State Security (1945–1990), investigation and court files of Czechoslovak citizens tried by the German Reich courts, and the collection entitled Study Institute of the Ministry of the Interior.
Department 3: Collections of the MoI of the Czech Republic, State Security and MoI Armed Forces
This department administers materials produced by the former Ministry of the Interior, Ministry of the Interior of the Czechoslovak Republic, Ministry of the Interior of the Czech Republic and collections of the central and regional units of the Public Security Corps (VB) from 1945–1991/1992, including secondary schools of the National Security Corps, regional units of the former State Security, selected units of the Federal Ministry of the Interior, Forced Labour Camps, Internment Camps, Prison Corps, personal materials of the employees of all units of the MoI, army officers working for Military Counterintelligence and Military Intelligence, and the Prison Security Services, Border Security Corps and the Armed Forces of the MoI.
Department 4: Act 262/2011 Coll. – Anti-Communist Resistance Act
This department is engaged in agendas relating to Main Foreign Intelligence Directorate (Directorate I of the National Security Corps), Main Military Counterintelligence Directorate (Directorate III), Intelligence Department of the General Headquarters of the Czechoslovak People’s Army, Primary Units of the Communist Party of Czechoslovakia and the National Front acting within the Intelligence Department of the General Headquarters, and Security Department of the Prison Administration Department.
