The Archive of Bosnia and Herzegovina, the first modern archival institution in Bosnia and Herzegovina, was founded in 1947, by decision of the Government of the People's Republic of Bosnia and Herzegovina no. 1061 of December 12, 1947. Today, that date is celebrated as the Day of Archives of Bosnia and Herzegovina. In 1965, based on the provisions of the Law on Archives, it continued its activities as the Archive of Bosnia and Herzegovina. Under that name, the archive still operates today, in the sovereign state of Bosnia and Herzegovina.
Although the archive service as an organized activity of preservation, protection and professional processing of archival materials in Bosnia and Herzegovina began only in 1947, there is a rich tradition of preservation and protection of archival materials in Bosnia and Herzegovina. In the absence of archival institutions, considerable archival materials were collected over the centuries by libraries, museums and other institutions, as well as by conscious individuals. Although there was a relatively small number of such institutions in the past in Bosnia and Herzegovina, and they did not concentrate on collecting what we know today as public archival material, without them much archival heritage would not have been preserved.
The basic regulation of the Archive of Bosnia and Herzegovina is the Law on Archives and Archives of Bosnia and Herzegovina. On the basis of this Law, two implementing regulations have been adopted so far, namely: Rulebook on taking archival material into the Archives of Bosnia and Herzegovina and Rulebook on the protection and preservation of archival materials in the Archives of Bosnia and Herzegovina and registry materials in the institutions of Bosnia and Herzegovina. The Decision on the Office Operations of Ministries, Services, Institutions and Other Bodies of the Council of Ministers of Bosnia and Herzegovina, which was amended in 2003 (Decision on Amendments to the Decision on Office Operations of Ministries, Services, Institutions and Other Bodies) is also important for archival material and archival activities of the Council of Ministers of Bosnia and Herzegovina), and for its implementation the Instruction on the manner of conducting office business of ministries, services, institutions and other bodies of the Council of Ministers of Bosnia and Herzegovina was adopted.
